Did government dump wheat in the ocean in the 70's.

Was thinking about the various farm programs we've had since I've been farming. Remembered a story that one time the government had so much wheat from farmers forfeiting loans because of the low cash wheat price, that they just loaded it on ships and dumped it in the ocean. Always wondered if that was true or just a story.

It did not happen. It was effectiively given away to foreign countries under P.L. 480.

I always thought with all the starving people in the world that dumping it would be a sin. However I was told that if they would give it away, it would be a detriment to higher wheat prices. Could never quite believe that would have happened.
