    What is an American?

Found this little article written on July 3, 1998, eons ago considering what we have been through in this country. I think it kinda sums up what many of us may think an American is. Enjoy, John

    What Is an American?

    by Edward L. Hudgins

This article appeared on cato.org on July 3, 1998.

We celebrate July Fourth as the day the Declaration of Independence created the United States. But in my heart I also honor July 15. On that day in 1930 Giustino DiCamillo, my grandfather, arrived here with my grandma, aunts and an uncle to start their lives as Americans. My mom was born the next year.

I never had the chance to hear my grandpop's deepest thoughts about his extraordinary journey and rich, long life, which ended when I was fairly young. But one way I can understand his character, and the character of my country, is to reflect on the question, "What is an American?"

An American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it has to offer. Americans are not automatically satisfied with their current situation. My grandpop wanted to be more than a poor, landless tenant farmer, no better off than his ancestors. Americans look to more than the next meal; they look to the future, the long term, a better tomorrow.

Edward L. Hudgins is director of regulatory studies at the Cato Institute.

An American is anyone who understands that to achieve the best in life requires action, exertion, effort. Americans aren't idle daydreamers; they take the initiative. Fortune did not fall into my grandpop's hands. He had traveled to America several times before 1930 to find work, establish himself, and make it possible to bring over the family. He toiled for years to achieve his dream, but achieve it he did.

An American is anyone who understands the need to use one's mind and wits to meet life's challenges. How would grandpop secure the money necessary for his first trip to America? Where would he find a job and a place to stay? You don't need college to know that you have to use your brain as well as your brawn to make your way in America.

The principles of this country are no mere abstractions; they are written in the hearts of all true Americans.
An American is anyone who understands that achieving the best in life requires risks. Immigrants have no assurance of success in a new land with different habits, institutions and language. They leave friends, relatives and familiar places, often risking their lives to cross oceans and hostile country to reach their new homes. But they, like all Americans, understand that the timid achieve nothing and forgo even that which sustains us through the worst of times: hope.

The nature of Americans explains the precious opportunity that has drawn millions to these shores. The Declaration states that all men are endowed "with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

Americans seek economic prosperity, leaving behind the resentment in other countries that is aimed at those who better their material condition. Throughout the world and throughout history, millions of individuals have endured poverty with dignity. But there is no inherent dignity in poverty. Individuals came to America to farm their own farms and run their own enterprises. My grandpop found work on streetcar lines so he could buy a house and provide a better life for his family.

Americans seek personal liberty, to live as they see fit, to worship as they please. Americans seek freedom from the use of power wielded arbitrarily by whoever holds the political sword. My grandpop no doubt did not want to be at Mussolini's mercy.

The Declaration -- and the Constitution that followed it -- created a political regime for individuals who wished to be united with their countrymen not essentially by a common language, ethnic background, or other accident of birth. Americans are united by a love of liberty, respect for the freedom of others and an insistence on their own rights as set forth in the Declaration.

Unfortunately, the American spirit has eroded. Our forebears would look with sadness at the servile and envious character of many of our citizens and policymakers. But the good news is that there are millions of Americans around the world, living in every country. Many of them will never make it here to the United States. But they are Americans, just as my grandpop was an American before he ever left Italy. And just as millions discovered America in the past, we can rediscover what it means to be an American. The principles of this country are no mere abstractions; they are written in the hearts of all true Americans. And it is the spirit of America, the spirit of my grandfather, that we should honor on July Fourth.

Your right again faust, your on a roll, we are proud of you!!!!!!!

They left Europe, because they "Wanted to be MORE than a POOR landless tenant farmer!!!!!!

And now the corrupt socialist government in the ignorance of Larger More Efficient farms under the corrupt farm program/crop insurance and corrupt taxxing situation that puts the "Sales" taxes on the poor, but gives huge tax breaks to the rich, 1031 exchange and cut taxes for the super mega rich, the US now has a small minute percent that holds the land thanks to government tax breaks for the rich, and increased taxes (sales tax) on the poor.

The poor tenant custom slaves need to get out and plant that corn, so the rich land owners can have another winter in the sun, while the slaves bragg about howmany acres they (hoe for the masters) and plant a day.

Socialism, corrupt government farm program/ crop insurance, denial to capitalism and what it means to be American. why they left europe, and what they called America, is now been tranformed back to what their fore fathers left Europe to escape from. The reality of being uneducated to what you dont want to happen to a nation, is now what the US has become.

Ignorant is somebody who thinks they are successfull today, in reality, they failed to hold a standard, they left it all deteriate, and now are too ignorant to admit, they failed, to Keep America from becoming the reality of failure, greed and gluttony of a nation of afew, and the rest, made slaves.

Good JOb faust, to realize and point this out.

castigate, what uneducated ignorance is that supose to mean?
48, dont you know, faust would rent his land only to a God fearing family that puts nothing in front of God, and would have no regard to anything than the idea to get a young family into farming as a life long ambition of his, and to .
Disprove the statement we challenged him to of "" getting a child into farming is child abuse.""

thats now faust entire mission statement in life, he has humbled himself that his total focus is to the future, even if he has to be torn to giving the farm to a Young family to make it happen, or to that Catholic school to promote the education of youth to Truth.

You have such little faith 48. faust will no longer subcome to any issue that points to his promotion of anything that is, UN-American. and that also goes to the attack of any other religious sect or belief in the one true God.

To be a shining example and a focus to Alll in recognition and standing to putting nothing in front of God, One nation under God, to be a true example of what it means to be, and called, AN American!!!!!!!!!!

Faust, is now the Man!!!!!! WE love faust!!!!!!!

48, contrary to your criticism of son wearing camo brown in mountains of California (Bridgeport) area. I think the Marines would rather provide a target to know where to shoot. He is having "fun" preparing for another deployment. Since he will be in charge of flight ops I thought it rather secure, but having to seek out the most desolate areas for planning strikes. He is leading ops in USMC Mountain Warfare Training Center ne of Yosemite. David Crane has discussed the remoteness of terrain of the area. I would not mind the mission if aware of prospect of "goal". BHO has no idea what he is doing and conveys that daily to the military. They are similar to a police officer in Memphis prohibited from shooting a warning shot and fearful if they do shoot someone. Zido, please provide your address if he is in the area.

48, that is the real reason we Love Faust, he would never alow himself to be caught up in a Delusion of Grandeur.

Delusion of Grandeur would be the opposite of being educated, yet at the same time, Delusion of Grandeur is what todays Universities Teach, now isn that amazing, what is supose to be a system of higher education, is a superstition psychosis of grandur.

A mind is a terrible thing to waiste, that is for sure.
The only thing worse to waiste than a mind is a soul, and more specificly not your own soul, but far greater the soul of another.

Now that gets to the heart and "soul" of what it means to be an American. Too bad todays universities of higher "potential" learning dont know that to teach it.

Alzado,Alzado,Alzado the socialism that is Islam! Where the mantra is "all for one and one for all". I kinda like the word "Individualism" best of all. It describes what most Americans believe they are. I will agree . . . that the individual is quickly losing ground in our socialist societ. More and more Americans, government emplouyees and Equal Opportunity proponents who do not want to "do what is necessary" to achieve a good life will seek property rights in achievements of those who did.

These dead heads then demand that those who have sacrificed much and risked everything and who are still standing at the end of the ordeal share the rewards of their lives with them. I love the idea that, "since our ancestors were slaves, we have a right to compensation for their suffering", give me a break. Ancestors of anyone fortunate enough to be in this country have already received the only reward they are entitled to.

It is these people who are the "lucky sperm cells" you often refer too. I have little empathy for anyone who has had an opportunity to be born here and then fail to act upon the opportunity of being born in this country. There is really only one limitation on any person who is healthy, not a criminal, and who has elected to take advantage of the free education in this country, and that limitation is the person themselves.

It is just too easy to make an excuse on why something cannot be accomplished, or why a risk cannot be undertaken. THat is why 99% work for wages and 1% grasps all the opportunity and rewards that "assumption of risk" in the United States provides. The only limiting factor on how far a person chooses to go in America, is the limitation that "lucky sperm cell" places on itself.

I mean . . . that new car, that new house, and the trappings of a Madison Avenue image, is more important than "doing what is necessary" to achieve real "independence", which comes with the accumulation of capital. Capital is only accumulated with the "assumption of risk".

If a "lucky sperm cell" in America elects the Image route, they automatically burden themselves of being on the outside, looking in. Today most Americans are spectators, wanting what others have sacrificed and spent many years to achieve . . . in short . . . they want to create "property rights" in "private property" someone else paid a price to own.

Of course . . . that is what people who never had a "dream" to pursue do. Why work for anything, or risk anything, if the government will provide for you, or give you a leg up, because in your case, skin color or gender is more important than merit and brains and being the best qualified for a job.

This is the dumbing down of America that has created a socialistic society we are now experiencing, and that is why it is hard to view any one associated with an ethnic group; who believe they deserve advantages and success over another group because of history or skin color, without first doing the work or taking the risks others are and have taken to achieve success

I think you get the idea! Adios Amigo. John aka Infidel.
