I spent a pile of money again this winter on my planter to make sure every seed is placed at the perfect depth and distance from one another because this is what it takes to get optimum yield from my crops. I do this every year.

From my own personal experience, and by consulting with some very smart agronomists, and seed people who have done a pile of research on the subject, this is what we feel is needed to achieve optimum yields.

I also spent a small fortune on a new tillage tool this spring to create the perfect seed bed in a timely manner which is what we feel is also needed for optimum yields.

Last spring mother nature allowed me to plant into near perfect conditions in a very timely manner, and we had near perfect weather conditions.

I had almost perfect plant spacing, and even though I didn't get as much moisture as I would have liked at the tail end of the season, and had a couple drowned out spots mid season, I wound up with a "better than expected crop" because of the perfect planting conditions, and plant stand.

Now this spring, mother nature has provided me with very poor weather conditions, which has forced me to plant into a much less than desirable seed bed, in a very untimely manner(i'm still far from finished planting beans)which despite my best efforts, has so far given me one of the poorer plant stands I have had in a long time, lots of gaps and blank areas larger than will sometimes drowned out. I will not achieve a better than expected yield this year.

Now here's where I get confused.

The marketing experts are telling me poor planting conditions, poor plant stands, and timely planting does not matter, and I'm still going to achieve record yields. If what the marketing experts tell me is true, why have I been wasting all this time, effort, and money trying to achieve perfect planting conditions and get a perfect plant stand?

Due to continuing wet weather, some farmers will not have planted all their corn by the final planting dates contained in their crop insurance policies. Once the final planting date has been reached, a farmer that has purchased the COMBO product (RP, RP with exclusion, or YP) will have the option of taking a prevented planting payment. In many cases, taking the prevented planting payment will be an economically attractive alternative.
